Why I Call Him My Partner(and not Just Husband)
Reimagining marriage through words, roles, and a laundry room epiphany
You know how random thoughts just pop into your head while you’re folding clothes, jogging, or taking a shower? The subject might seem simple, but somehow it runs deep when you sit with it.
The other day, I had one of those moments while doing laundry. It was early morning and my husband had already left for work. I was separating the colors and the whites as the sun beamed across the cluttered clothes , and my large black leather Bible sitting on the dresser.
“I feel like a partner,” I whispered, tossing the clothes into the washing machine.
I closed the lid with a BANG and leaned against it.
“I’m not some wife from the ‘50s,” I mused. “I earn income too. My husband cooks a few days a week because he loves it. He cleans the house and is great at it. He shows me he loves me.”
The Zoom moment that shifted my thinking
It was nearly two years ago during a brief Friday Zoom meeting when I first heard a heterosexual couple refer to themselves as partners. I was surprised. My first assumption? That this was a term used primarily in, LGBTQ relationships.
